*Blog Blitz Review & Giveaway: “The Gathering” by Bernadette Giacomazzo

The Gathering

Today’s book review is for the one day blog blitz of The Gathering by Bernadette Giacomazzo, hosted by Rachel’s Random Resources.

The Gathering Ebook

The Uprising Series tells the story of three freedom fighters and their friends in high — and low — places that come together to overthrow a vainglorious Emperor and his militaristic Cabal to restore the city, and the way of life, they once knew and loved.

In The Gathering, Jamie Ryan has defected from the Cabal and has joined his former brothers-in-arms — Basile Perrinault and Kanoa Shinomura — to form a collective known as The Uprising. When an explosion leads to him crossing paths with Evanora Cunningham — a product of Jamie’s past — he discovers that The Uprising is bigger, and more important, than he thought.

Quill Reviews

The Gathering was a bit of an odd read for me. Aimed at new adults, it’s a strange mix of first person narration, with several flashback scenes, foul language, and a sense of confusion overall.

Unfortunately, as much as I tried to enjoy it, I just didn’t feel invested in the characters. I felt that there were scenes deliberately designed to shock the reader, and while I don’t want to give away any spoilers, I felt that they could have been handled with more subtlety.

On the other hand, The Gathering deals with some very real issues and confronts them head-on; there’s no chance of burying your head in the sand and pretending the world is idyllic with this book. It made a refreshing change from dystopian fiction that shies away from actually dealing with the issues that created the mess in the first place.

The elements that Giacomazzo has combined to create a science-fiction world are fascinating, and I’m curious to see what she has in store for the rest of the series. I particularly liked the elements of Rock n Roll, and the psychic abilities, but I felt the latter was only hinted at and hopefully will be explored in greater depth in the rest of the series.

Overall, The Gathering receives three out of five feathers.

Abby Spencer knows she can come across as an airhead – she talks too much and is a bit of a klutz – but there’s more to her than that. That’s until she hurries in late wearing a shirt covered in rusk crumbs, courtesy of her baby nephew, and trips over her handbag.

All he knows is she’s a breath of fresh air and could bring a new lease of life to the stale corporate world of Crumbs. To his life too, if he’d let her.

But Doug’s harbouring a secret. He’s not the man she thinks he is.

*Blog Tour Review: “When the Waters Recede” by Graham Smith + Harry Evans 6 Book Giveaway

When The Waters Recede

Today’s book review hosted by Rachel’s Random Resources is for a novel featuring DI Harry Evans: When the Waters Recede, by Graham Smith.

When Waters Recede Cover

When a car is pulled from raging floodwaters with a dead man in the front and the decapitated body of an evil woman in the boot, Cumbria’s Major Crimes Team are handed the investigation.

The woman is soon recognised, but the man cannot be identified and this leads the team and their former leader, Harry Evans, into areas none of them want to visit.

Before they know it, they’re dealing with protection scams and looking for answers to questions they didn’t know needed to be asked.

Quill Reviews

When I had the opportunity to review a full-length novel about Cumbria’s Major Crimes team, and DI Harry Evans, I jumped at it. I reviewed No Comment earlier this year and loved it.

I think my favourite part of this whole series is how real the characters are. The trauma and stresses of their jobs are dealt with in a believable fashion, rather than ignored or glossed over.

Lauren is still my favourite character, I have a soft spot for Harry Evans who now consults with his former team, and I think I may have recognised a few of my computer geek friends in Chisholm (I still have no idea how to pronounce his name though? :/ )

The story was well-paced, the mystery was intriguing and horrifying, and I loved the end, which unfolded quite spectacularly.

I’m not sure I’m allowed to enter the giveaway for the full series myself, but heck, if I could – I would!

When the Waters Recede gets four out of five feathers.

Purchase the novel from Amazon UK.

*Blog Tour Review: “Manipulated Lives” by H. A. Leuschel + International Giveaway

Manipulated LivesThis collection of short stories by Helen Andrea Leuschel tells of people whose lives have been changed by people close to them. Hosted by Rachel’s Random Resources, there’s a great giveaway for a signed copy of Manipulated Lives at the end.

Manipulated lives

Five stories – Five Lives

Have you ever felt confused or at a loss for words in front of a spouse, colleague or parent, to the extent that you have felt inadequate or, worse, a failure? Do you ever wonder why someone close to you seems to endure humiliation without resistance?

Manipulators are everywhere. At first these devious and calculating people can be hard to spot, because that is their way. They are often masters of disguise: witty, disarming, even charming in public – tricks to snare their prey – but then they revert to their true self of being controlling and angry in private. Their main aim: to dominate and use others to satisfy their needs, with a complete lack of compassion and empathy for their victim.

In this collection of short novellas, you meet people like you and me, intent on living happy lives, yet each of them, in one way or another, is caught up and damaged by a manipulative individual. First you meet Tess, whose past is haunted by a wrong decision, then young, successful and well balanced Sophie, who is drawn into the life of a little boy and his troubled father. Next, there is teenage Holly, who is intent on making a better life for herself, followed by a manipulator himself, trying to make sense of his irreversible incarceration. Lastly, there is Lisa, who has to face a parent’s biggest regret. All stories highlight to what extent abusive manipulation can distort lives and threaten our very feeling of self-worth.

Quill Reviews

Having already read Tess and TattoosI was looking forward to the other stories in this collection.

In order to review it properly, I’m going to look at each of the other stories individually, as, though the theme is common to all of them, they’re all quite different.

The Spell tells the story of Sophie, who takes on the role of a mother figure to little Leo, never suspecting that his father may be keeping secrets. Although I liked the overall plot, I was slightly bored by the style it was written in. It’s told in first person, and Sophie’s wavering between trusting David, and questioning the truth of his comments was annoying from the beginning. There was a lot of exposition, which left me feeling a lot like I was being told what to feel, rather than being shown the story and deciding for myself.

Runaway Girl drew me in completely. I loved the story, told in third person, of Holly’s life and the realisation that as a teenager she was dealing with way more than she ever should have had to. What I didn’t like was Sara’s side-story, and the casual way it was dealt with, although obviously, in a short story like this there isn’t a lot of room to delve into secondary characters. Still, I felt it could have been handled differently. Holly’s improving relationship with her mother, however, was wonderful to see, and I loved the ending.

The Narcissist left me with some really conflicting feelings. On the one hand, I felt really bad for the character whose life had taken such an abrupt turn, and ended so tragically. On the other, I felt for the people who’d been the victims of his deceit and lies, and I’m still not really sure what to think of the story. It was well-written, and the questions it provoked were very unsettling.

My Perfect Child left me angry. It reminded me of an incident I experienced years ago, when I was working as an aftercare teacher at a primary school, and had to deal with a “perfect child” whose mother excused their ill-mannered and bullying behaviour to a ridiculous degree. I wasn’t sure whether the ending was what I would have expected to happen, but at the same time, I felt Lisa deserved her fate, as did her son.

Overall, Manipulated Lives deals with some really uncomfortable and difficult topics, that are a daily reality for many people. While it isn’t easy reading, it was well-written and I enjoyed the majority of the tales.

The collection gets four out of five feathers.

Tess and Tattoos

I’m one of the lucky ones to be opening the 3 Day Blog Blitz for short story, Tess and Tattoos, by Helen Andrea Leuschel. Hosted by Rachel’s Random Resources, there’s a great giveaway for a signed copy of Manipulated Lives at the end.

Tess and Tattoos - High Resolution - Font Match

A suspenseful and emotional novella exploring whether we can ever be free from our past mistakes.

In this story, the reader is taken on a compelling journey into the human mind where genuine friendship offers the key to inner peace.

Meet Tess, an elderly lady living in a care home apartment in the outskirts of Edinburgh, whose past is haunted by a wrong decision. She meets Nurse Sandra, a warm and bubbly single mother of three, who is instantly intrigued by Tess’s personality and the mystery that surrounds her.

Tess and Tattoos is one of five gripping stories in HA Leuschel’s story collection Manipulated Lives centred around psychological manipulation.

Quill Reviews

I can’t say much about Tess and Tattoos without giving anything away. It’s a quick read, and rather delightful.

Rather than looking at psychological manipulation as it happens, it deals with the effects and consequences of being caught in that situation.

Leuschel has an evocative writing style that draws you in and leaves you wanting more. Tess reminded me a lot of my grandmother, and Sandra is exactly the kind of nurse I’d want to look after her.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching their lives and friendship unfold.

This lovely short story gets four out of five feathers.
